Summer at Whitefish Mountain Resort: Mountain Biking & Day Hikes

Adventure awaits you at Whitefish Mountain Resort! Less than 6 miles from the Lodge at Whitefish Lake you can find a multitude of summer activities that guarantee excitement for everyone. Whitefish Mountain Resort will be featured in our first bi-weekly miniseries as we highlight various summer fun on the mountain.

One of the fastest growing and most popular summer activities at Whitefish Mountain Resort (WMR) is mountain biking. With nearly 30 miles of both downhill and cross country trails within the mountain bike park, you are sure to find the perfect route for you skill level. Some trails are accessible by chair lift.

Whether you're an audacious biker seeking to soar on the Runaway Train, or an easy-going vacationer looking to enjoy a leisurely ride on the Gravy Train, WMR provides breathtaking views of the valley and a passing look into the beautiful nature that makes Northwest Montana a top destination.

WMR also offers races for those who wish to test their skills against other experienced opponents.Thursday Night Race League runs throughout the summer for cross country bikers. 2014 has been the inaugural year for WMR's Enduro Races for advanced bikers as well. These races feature an untimed climbing phase, as well as a timed descent. Another favorite are Twilight Night Rides and Clinics featuring an extra hour of riding as well as education on the finer points of mountain biking with a certified instructor.

Mountain biking is just the start of the fun found at WMR! Another popular summer activity on the mountain is hiking the Danny On Memorial Trail (pictured at top). This day hike trail extends 3.8 miles that saunter up Big Mountain to its summit and boasts impressive views of Glacier National Park and the Flathead Valley. If you wish to adventure farther, you can add the Flower Point Loop for a hike of 5.6 miles total (one way). Hikers may also ride the chair lift up or down, giving them the option of trekking just the Flower Point or East Rim Loops. The Danny On Trail is an excellent source for taking in the variety of natural beauty of the area, including the coveted wild huckleberry and gorgeous bear grass, making it one of the top hiking trails in Whitefish.
